Communicating with Policymakers about Population and Health

East-West Center

Beginning in 1996, the East-West Center conducted a workshop in June every year on Communicating with Policymakers about Population and Health. In 2010, the length of the workshop was reduced from four to three weeks to accommodate the schedule of busy professionals. In 2012, the East-West Center decided to discontinue this and other workshops that were components of the Center's annual Summer Seminar on Population.

Over 16 years, 232 participants took part in this workshop. They were researchers, program managers, and other population and health professionals working in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the United States.

Shorter workshops have been conducted based this curriculum in Costa Rica, India, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, and Uganda.

The objective of the workshop was to increase the use of research findings and professional knowledge and experience in the design and implementation of population and health policies and programs. Sessions were designed to help participants identify the policy implications of population and health research, understand how research findings and professional knowledge can influence the policy process, and communicate with policymakers in simple and compelling formats.
