1970s Reunion Conference
"Continuity and Change in the Asia Pacific U.S. Region: 1970 - 2007"
August 24 - 27, 2007
Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

If you were at the East-West Center in the 1970s, make plans to join us for a ’70s Reunion in 2007! We’ll gather in Honolulu from August 24 to 27, 2007.
Remember what it was like then. Those were exciting times! Everett Kleinjans was chancellor and the Center was starting Open Grants and the problem-oriented institutes devoted to Population, Communication, Culture Learning, Food and Technology and Development (these last two later became Resource Systems).
In 1975, the Center became a public non-profit educational corporation and Chancellor Kleinjans became President Kleinjans. Do you remember the staff and students lobbying at the State Legislature while the incorporation bill was being considered? That was also the year we mourned the loss of John A. Burns as governor of Hawai’i, a constant supporter of the Center. It was therefore quite natural in 1977, when the new EWC administration building was completed, to name and dedicate it to the memory of Governor Burns.
WOW! It seems like only yesterday when Terance Bigalke was a graduate student. Now the ’70s alum is the director of the EWC Education Program. Some staff of the ’70s are still working at the Center. Let me name a few and see if you remember them: Betty Buck, Minja Kim Choe, Mendl Djunaidy, Bill Feltz, Charlene Fujishige, Joyce Gruhn, Jeanne Hamasaki, Cheryl Hidano, Beverly Honda, Meheroo Jussawalla, Jo-Ann Kok, June Kuramoto, Karen Lam, Andrew Mason, Carol Matsuda, Pat Matsunaga, Claire Muranaka, Kathleen Paet, Bob Retherford, Gordon Ring, Brent Watanabe, Karen Yamamoto, and Peter (Smith) Xenos.
Surely, each of these individuals will be happy to be a part of a conversation about pleasant memories and future plans. We have much to look back on with pride and even more to look forward to with hope.
Mark your calendars now for what promises to be four fun-filled days.
